Building Safe and Violence-Free Environments

Wings of Freedom International hosted the international conference “Building Safe and Violence-Free Environments,” an educational event designed to strengthen understanding of the psychological dynamics of violence and promote the development of healthier, safer, and more respectful relationships.
The conference was led by MSc. Ingrid Reyes Fonseca, a clinical psychologist with more than 18 years of experience providing psychotherapy and supporting individuals facing crises and suicidal risk.
During the session, participants explored how violence can extend beyond physical abuse to include forms of control, intimidation, manipulation, and psychological abuse that undermine freedom, autonomy, and emotional well-being.

- Understanding violence from a psychological perspective.
- The impact of trauma and chronic survival responses.
- The importance of autonomy in breaking the cycle of violence.
- How to distinguish between healthy and abusive relationships.
- The importance of establishing healthy boundaries.

Through practical examples and an interactive discussion with participants, the conference encouraged meaningful reflection on the factors that can increase vulnerability to abusive relationships and highlighted the importance of strengthening personal autonomy, informed decision-making, and violence prevention.

In April 2026, Wings of Freedom International hosted the international live educational talk βDo You Know What a Fearful Heart Sounds Like?β, presented by Dr. Luis Carlos Barrios GonzΓ‘lez, guest cardiologist and specialist committed to promoting cardiovascular health through both a scientific and human-centered approach.
As an international organization, Wings of Freedom International connected participants from different countries to provide education, awareness, and accessible resources that promote the overall well-being of individuals and families around the world. On this occasion, Dr. Barrios joined from Spain to share his expertise with participants from nine countries.
During the talk, attendees explored the relationship between fear, stress, and cardiovascular health, gaining a deeper understanding of how emotions can influence the functioning of the heart and circulatory system. Through accessible medical explanations, practical examples, and interactive participation opportunities, the session addressed the physical and emotional effects of fear, as well as the importance of recognizing warning signs and adopting self-care practices.
The session brought together 67 participants from 9 countries, strengthening access to specialized education and promoting overall well-being through knowledge, prevention, and a better understanding of the connection between emotional and physical health.
About the Facilitator
Dr. Luis Carlos Barrios GonzΓ‘lez is a cardiologist with a Master’s Degree in Advances in Cardiology, dedicated to comprehensive cardiovascular care through a scientific and compassionate approach.
He is recognized for his approachable manner, his ability to communicate medical concepts clearly and accessibly, and his commitment to educating people about the relationship between emotions and cardiovascular health.
During this talk, he shared practical knowledge about how fear and stress can affect the heart, providing tools to recognize warning signs, understand their impact on the body, and promote healthy self-care habits and overall well-being.

Facing Violence and Building My Dreams

Over the course of seven consecutive weeks, Wings of Freedom International conducted the virtual workshop βFacing Violence and Building My Dreams,β a free program designed to support women survivors in their recovery journey, personal empowerment, and the development of a life plan free from violence.
Held every Saturday via Zoom, this safe and confidential space brought together 10 survivors from 7 countries: Houston, Texas (USA), Belgium, Spain, Colombia, Costa Rica, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.
Throughout the program, participants explored essential topics aimed at understanding and overcoming the impact of violence, including:
- Gender identity, stereotypes, and power dynamics
- Gender-based violence and its various forms
- The cycle of violence and learned helplessness
- Characteristics of abusive relationships
- The emotional impact of violence and the grieving process
- Self-esteem and assertive communication
- Stress, anxiety, and self-care
- Violence prevention and safety measures
- Decision-making and building a life project
In addition to gaining knowledge and practical tools, participants had the opportunity to share experiences, strengthen their resilience, and develop strategies to move toward a safer, more independent, and fulfilling life.

Recognizing the Signs of the Cycle of Violence
February 2026 | Virtual Workshop
Wings of Freedom International conducted the virtual workshop “Recognizing the Signs of the Cycle of Violence,” an educational session designed to help women who are victims and survivors of gender-based violence identify patterns of abuse, understand the dynamics of the cycle of violence, and strengthen their ability to make informed decisions about their safety and well-being.
Facilitated by a social worker, the workshop provided a safe space for learning, reflection, and support where participants gained practical knowledge about the warning signs of abusive relationships and the resources available for seeking help.
The session brought together 12 participants from Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Belgium, and Houston, Texas, who joined virtually in a confidential and respectful environment.
